Engineering and technology for sustainable development The nine billion inhabitants of the planet projected for the year 2050 represent a great challenge, since this implies a transformation in the way we connect, changes in public policy, business, research, etc. This research has the objective of promoting development in harmony with the environment, the economy, agriculture, urban planning and the exploitation of natural resources. In this context, technological and engineering advances play a key role in the service of the new require- ments. In Chile, growing demands regarding education, the economy, energy and the environment show a shift in the paradigm, to which the Uni- versidad de Chile responds with thought and long-term research.
