EFECTO DE LA ÉPOCA DE APLICACIÓN DEL FERTILIZANTE NITROGENADO SOBRE EL NIVEL DE NITRÓGENO EN FLORES Y HOJAS DE DURAZNERO

NITROGEN LEVEL OF PEACH TREE FLOWERS AND LEAVES AS AFFECTED BY THE TIME OF NITROGEN FERTILIZER APPLICATION

SUMMARY

Four application times of sodium nitrate to the soil were compared in adult "Nemaguard" peach trees: late summer, winter, spring, and split application late summer/spring.

Late summer application resulted in a high level of nitrogen in flowers and leaves at the initiation of shoot growth in the first year. However, the nitrogen level of the leaves during summer decreased more than in the other treatments.

The winter treatment reached a high nitrogen level in flowers and leaves throughout the growing season in the first year.

The spring treatment determined the highest nitrogen levels in flowers and leaves in the following year.

Split application given half in late summer and half in the spring resulted in nitrogen values in the tissues intermediate between those from late summer and those from spring applications.

The effect on the nitrogen level of leaves persisted until mid-summer of the following year regardless of the time at which the fertilizer was applied.

Key words: peach tree, nitrogen, time of application, level of nitrogen, flowers, leaves.
