EVALUACIÓN AGRONÓMICA Y
ECONÓMICA DE ALGUNOS CULTIVARES DE MAÍZ PARA CONSUMO FRESCO, BAJO DISTINTOS NIVELES
POBLACIONALES
AGRONOMIC AND ECONOMICAL ASSESSMENT OF MAIZE CULTIVARS FOR FRESH
CONSUME, GROWN UNDER DIFFERENT POPULATION DENSITIES

SUMMARY
Productive behaviour of JX-553, JX-303 and Toconao fresh
market corn hybrids, and Olathe Sweet, sweet corn hybrid, was evaluated at different
sowing rates. Comparisons were made for profits margin per hectare for each combination of
hybrid and plant density.
Plant populations were of 41,667; 44,444; 50,000; 53,333 and 62,500 plant/ha. Days and
degree-days to female flowering and to milky grain stage, length and diameter of ears,
weight of fresh ear and grain moisture and quality parameters of the ears were determined.
In addition, the percentage of first quality corn ears har-vested was determined to
finally conduct the economic analysis.
Hybrids JX-303 and Olathe Sweet, were the most precocious followed by Toconao, and JX-553,
all of them suffered delays with higher densities, buy maintained unchanged the period
from female flowering to harvest.
The ear dimensions differed among the fresh market corn cultivars and, their diameter
distinguished them from sweet corn. JX-553 performed the highest ear weights, followed by
JX-303 and Toconao.
The potential of each hybrid to produce first quality ears was reduced with increasing
density, because it ne-gatively affected weight and color.
The profit margin per hectare is superior with the hybrid JX-553, followed by JX-303 and
Toconao. Olathe Sweet was affected by high costs of the seed. Increasing rates of sowing
resulted in higher incomes but not in greater profit margin due to higher costs and lower
value of the crop.
The optimal population per hectare was 50,000 plants for the fresh market corn hybrids and
62,500 plants for Olathe Sweet.
Key words. Zea mays L. , density, population, quality, fresh market and rate of sowing,
