SUMMARY During a study of the predators of Rachiplusia nu (Guenée) larvae affecting field beans, Phaseolus vulgaris L., in Colina, Región Metropolitana, Chile, periodic samples of these caterpillars and their predator Polistes buyssoni (Brèthes), were obtained. The numbers of P. buyssoni were taken by counting during 5 min the wasps entering 5 x 5 m randomly placed plots; those of R. nu larvae by shaking manually during 5 sec the foliage of plants on 40 cm in a row over plastic trays, using 25 sampling stations selected randomly and four replications. No insecticide was applied in the first farm, and the wasps increased in numbers significantly. In the second farm, an application of deltamethrin when R. nu larvae were already decreasing in numbers, caused a marked reduction of caterpillars and wasps. A treatment with cypermethrin earlier than the first sampling date in a third farm did not allow population increases of R. nu and P. buyssoni. An application of sulphur in the fourth farm did not affect the caterpillars, but had a possible repellent action reflected in the (non-significant) tendency to a decrease in P. buyssoni numbers. Damage levels to the foliage by R. nu larvae were low. Thus, chemical treatments done by these farmers were judged unnecessary. Some Polistes species have been used in biological control programs of diverse caterpillars. These wasps, however, do not discriminate healthy from parasitized larvae, and probably capture more easily the last ones. Also, all the species in this genus may harm people, thus their use in these programs may be risky. Key words: beans, cypermethrin, deltamethrin, Phaseolus vulgaris, Polistes buyssoni, predation, Rachiplusia nu, sulphur. |
