EFECTO DE DISTINTOS TRATAMIENTOS A LOS ESTILOS DE LA MAZORCA EN LA PRODUCCIÓN DE SEMILLA HÍBRIDA DE MAÍZ (Zea mays L.)

SUMMARY

As during the last seasons, ear styles (silk) balling has been observed in plants used as females, a trial was carried out with two pure lines of corn (Zea mays L.), in order to develop an ear silk management method that enhances pollination, fecundation and seed yield.

Six experimental treatments were tested at the silking stage: two ear husk tip cutting patterns (vertical and horizontal), at three ear silk growth stages each (initial silking; 2.5 cm and 5.0 cm of length). Comparisons were also made with an uncut control treatment for each line.

In both corn lines used, seed number and rows, fecundation percentage and seed yield, were statistically higher in all the experimental treatments with respect to the uncut control. Seed yield showed a trend to decrease with more style growth at cutting. Cutting pattern effectiveness was different between lines, being horizontal cutting the most effective in one, while both patterns were equally effective in the other.

It is concluded that, in order to avoid silk balling and, thus obtain higher hybrid seed yields, tip cutting of corn husks should be carried out at early stages of silk development.

Key words: silk balling, corn ear, pollination, fecundation, pure lines, hybrid seed production.
