ABSTRACT

The 13C discrimination (D ) allows estimation of transpiration efficiency (W). At the plant level it relates the transpiration efficiency to the intercellular and atmospheric CO2 partial pressures. In this work we report D values for barley and we verify their possible use in indirect selection for W and yield. We present phenology, transpiration on D values of 10 barley genotypes grown in the greenhouse and in the field under various watering regimes. We observed variability for D across the various water treatments as well as with genotype. The genotype watering treatment interaction was insignificant for D . The D values obtained in the greenhouse experiment were significantly correlated with those obtained under field conditions (r=0.63;n=40). The correlation between D and biomass was positive in both environments while D and W were negatively correlated. It is concluded that D is good yield estimator for barley, particularly under water stress. It also predicts W reasonably well. The posible use of D in barley improvement programs is discussed.

Key words: barley, 13C isotopic discrimination, water use efficiency, drought resistance.
