SUMMARY

The movement of the soil-active herbicides napropamide, simazine, diuron, oxyfluorfen and norflurazon, and their phytotoxicity on 1 year-old apple and plum rootstocks MM 106 (Malus sp.) and Marianna 2624 (Prunus cerasifera x Prunus munsoniana), respectively were studied to establish a relationship between herbicide movement and phytotoxicity on plants. Herbicides were applied to weed-free soil at three times the commercially recommended dosage (Simazine, diuron and napropamide, dosage was 8 kg de active agent/ha, for norflurazon was 6.4 kg a.i./ha and oxifluorfen 2,76 kg a.i./ha).

Herbicides presence at different soil depths were measured through bioassays using oat (Avena sativa L.). Herbicide activity was expressed as fresh weight reduction in comparison to control plants. Herbicides showed activity at soil depths studied (0 - 30 cm) during the 3 months trial; activity was always greater in the first 15 cm.

Apple trees did not show visual symptoms of damage, whereas plum trees, showed symptoms similar to those reported by the literature for all herbicides studied. This suggests that positional selectivity of herbicides is less important than tolerance of the fruit tree species.

Key words: movility, phytotoxicity, herbicide, plum, apple.
