EFECTIVIDAD DE LA FOSFAMINA EN LOS TRATAMIENTOS DE FRUTOS DE Prosopis chilensis (Mol.) Stuntz PARA EL CONTROL DE BRUCHIDAE QUE INFESTAN LAS SEMILLAS Y SU INCIDENCIA SOBRE LA CALIDAD

PHOSPHINE EFFICIENCY AND ITS EFFECT ON QUALITY ON FRUIT TREATMENTS OF Prosopis chilensis (Mol.) Stuntz TO CONTROL BRUCHIDAE INFESTING SEEDS

SUMMARY

The fruits from Prosopis are generally fumigated with phosphine when harvested to eliminate the bruchidae that infest the seeds. On account that no previous experiments have been performed to evaluate the efficacy of this insecticide, the main objectives were: a) to evaluate the effect of two phosphine dosage (3 and 6 mg L-1) in function of two exposure times (4 and 8 days) and b) to analyze the effect of the treatments on the quality. The fruits from four P. chilensis trees were harvested individually and 1000 g of pods from each one were used. The seeds were sorted as healthy and infested. The former were subjected to germination and vigour tests. The efficacy of the treatments was evaluated by placing the infested seeds in a chamber at 25ºC for six months. The number of generated adult insects was recorded every two days. The statistical analysis revealed significant differences among treatments. The most effective were 3 and 6 mg L-1 doses with an 8-days exposure. However, the efficacy of the control of insects was low reaching 58% or lower values. Quality assays indicated that the treatments did not affect germination or vigour.
