ESTABLECIMIENTO Y PERSISTENCIA DEL TRÉBOL SUBTERRÁNEO EN EL SECANO DE LA PROVINCIA DEL CARDENAL CARO (VI REGIÓN), CHILE II. LIMITANTES EDÁFICAS ESTABLISHMENT AND PERSISTENCE OF SUBTERRANEUM CLOVER IN THE RANGE LANDS OF CARDENAL CARO PROVINCE (VIth REGION), CHILE. II. EDAPHIC LIMITATIONS
SUMMARY A prospect of edaphic properties was carried out in granitic soils as well as in soils of marine terraces in the range lands of Cardenal Caro Province, with the purpose of improving the prairie productivity, mainly in those sown with subterraneum clover (Trifolium subterraneum L.), in which this has limitations for its establishment and persistence. Fourteen different sites considering the presence of subterraneum clover and geomorphological position were selected. Two composite samples were taken from each site at a depth of 0 - 20 cm and from 20 - 40 cm, respectively. The edaphic properties were characterized by morphological description in soil pit and chemical and physical analysis. These properties were interpreted according to the established requirements for subclover. The soils in general were strongly to moderately acid (13 sites) and neutral (one site) in the first 20 cm, with an average value of 5,6 in the granitic soils as well as in the soils of marine terraces. The acidity decreased between the 20 to 40 cm deep. Moreover, in the first 20 cm low average contents for organic matter (1.77 and 2.41%), inorganic nitrogen (8 and 10 mg kg-1 ), and available phosphorus (9 and 7 mg kg-1), sulfur (2.6 and 1.8 mg kg-1), boron (0.14 and 0.32 mg kg-1 ) and molybdenum (3.1 and 2.6 mg kg-1 ) were found for the granitic and marine terrace soils, respectively. The available potassium was in the limit of the critical level and it was deficient in four sites of granitic soils and in only one of marine terrace soils. Micronutrients were at adequate levels except zinc in two sites of granitic soils. The average cation exchange capacity was low in the granitic soils and medium in soils of marine terrace. The aluminum saturation was low indicating that Al toxicity problems could not occur in the soils with acid pH. The base saturation ranged from low to very high values. The soils of marine terraces showed slightly better edaphic properties than the granitic soils, as well as a faster nitrogen mineralization trend. The most outstanding limitations for the subclover were the P and S nutrient deficiencies besides, N should be added for supplying its demand in other species (Poaceae), and the micronutrient B and Mo, and perhaps the soil acidity in some sites. Calcium and magnesium deficiencies were not found. Phosphorus and S deficiencies would probably explain the scarce and weak nodulation observed. The establishment and persistence of subclover would primarily depend on P fertilization and additionally on that of S, B and Mo, besides the soil acidity control when it be necessary. Key words: soils of central range land, subclover limitations, establishment and persistence of subclover.
